NEWSLETTER ISSUE 6                                                                                                                      June 2015

On May 14th the SBCC honored our 2015 Scholarship Award recipients with a dinner at Tuscarora Inn & Conference Center.  Congratulations again to Daryn Green, Kayla Waidner, Bonnie Jackson, Angelina Biondo, Dominico Palma and Kelli Franza.

Without our annual Scholarship Golf Classic and all our sponsors these awards would not be possible.  With this in mind, GOLFERS WANTED, CALL TODAY!  Mark your calendar and join us on July 20th for a fun day packed with golf, networking, food, prizes and more!  Proceeds benefit 100% of our Scholarship Program.  See flyer.

Thank you to Teresa’s Restaurant in Mt. Bethel for hosting our April Networking Business Luncheon as well as our guest speak Bill Skinner of Paramount Business Development.  Also, kudo’s to Mike of Three Brother Beverage for hosting our Networking Mixer & Little Creek BBQ for sponsoring the food.  The food & donations for our local food pantries was greatly appreciated.

Economic Development Committee Update

We are making an effort to determine the need for more high-speed Internet access throughout the Slate Belt.  We are in the process of collecting data from the business owners in the region to be used to create a business plan for the expansion of broadband service in our underserved areas.  Once complete, the business plan could then be used to obtain state and federal grants to fund the expansion of broadband service.

It is important for our business owners, residents and children to have access to quality internet services.  From a business perspective there’s also an incentive there, both for existing businesses and to attract new businesses that need high-quality internet and access to speed that we currently don’t have.

Please take a minute and complete the attached survey and return it to the chamber.  The SBCC ED committee next meeting will be June 16th, 8 am at the chamber office.  If you are interested in sitting in on the broadband sub-committee, please contact the office.

It is that time of year again to prepare for our Annual Bi Chamber Clambake.  Again we would like to invite you to participate in a silent auction during the clam bake on Wednesday, August 19th at Evergreen Lakes in Bath.  Our committee is canvassing chamber members to contribute a gift in the name of their company that will benefit their respective chamber.  The donated item is to be given at your discretion, but we are adding an incentive plan in place that you will find hard to ignore!  We are offering you the opportunity to obtain free clambake tickets that will coincide with the value of your gift.  Valued donations of $100-$150 you may purchase one ticket at ½ price.  Valued donations of $150 and over will receive 1 complimentary ticket.  Your donation may be dropped off at the chamber office or we can pick it up.  Should you wish to make a contribution, please contact the office by email with a description of your gift, value and when you will be dropping it off or arrange pick up.  Last year we had over 250 chamber members and guests in attendance, don’t miss this networking opportunity.

SAVE the DATES for this year’s Annual Longaberger Basket & Vera Bradley Bingo, September 13th, 1 pm at the Bangor Elks Lodge #1106, tickets $20 each and sponsor opportunities available.

And the Taste of the Slate Belt Business Expo, Wednesday, September 30th, 4-8 pm.  Sign up to showcase your business!  Reserve an 8’ table to display/sell your products and or your services.  Let the residents of the Slate Belt know what your company is all about.  Admission will be free and opened to the public.

Networking 101, Bill Skinner, Paramount Business Development

New rule of networking….it is not who you know….it is who knows you!!!  Networking is about….connections!

Key points to networking:

Have a plan; what type of event, networking groups, chamber functions, trade shows.  What type of people, complimentary businesses, potential clients, connectors?

Set goals attend each event with specific goals, focused on quality contacts, attend as if you are the host, and be someone of value/resource.

Be prepared for the event; be ready to take advantage of every opportunity available, use your elevator speech and ask questions.

Prepare your elevator speech; pick your top 3 things that make you unique; write your 30 second commercial, introduce-your name and business name, your headline and your key points and if you have a slogan, offer or guarantee.

Your mother taught you everything you needed to know about sales and networking before you were 10 years old!  Make friends, play nice, tell the truth, take a bath & do your homework.

Be involved; network everywhere, meet new people, spend 5 minutes with each, meet everyone.

Make it fun!

Pennsylvania improves as ‘best place to do business’

Pennsylvania made the second biggest jump in a recent report of the best places in the country to do business.

Pennsylvania ranked 42nd on the list in 2014, a jump of seven spots. Only Idaho, which jumped from 28th to 18th, had a bigger improvement in the rankings.

The survey praised the state’s workforce quality and noted the employment rate from December that was nearly a full percentage-point lower than the national average.

However, the tax burden in Pennsylvania (10.3 percent) is higher than the national average (9.8 percent), according to the survey. The survey also noted competing states beginning to “lick (their) chops” as Gov. Tom Wolf proposes the new levy on oil and gas drilling.

“CEOs have referred to the new governor as anti-business, and feel the state needs more business incentives,” according to the survey results.

Texas and Florida ranked as the top two states, while California and New York ranked worst.
